I’ve been studying and watching consumers now for 38 years in many different markets both in Australia and abroad.  I spent my formative years at Coca Cola Amatil joining the market research department in the early ’80s and it was a very fortunate time to be with a large company.  Being set the task of working with my boss in the development of new research methodologies for the benefit of the Amatil group of companies, we set about creating some of the most advanced and creative market modelling and testing regimes available.

After a brief stint in marketing as a product manager I began my first research company which, after an extensive and exhaustive search for a snappy and catchy brand name,  became Emerson & Hughes. Dr Phil Emerson and I set about re-creating many of the techniques we had developed at Amatil, updating and refining the techniques for the modern connected world. This resulted in the creation of our online surveying package which we called SMP, an advanced survey scripting and hosting program which is still available today (SMP Software), our own field team (VIP Surveys Pty Ltd) with scanning and PDA empowered data collection systems and a marketing consultancy group called Spyglass Solutions.

Alas, age did weary us and so we retired from the game in 2017 closing our agencies. Phil set off into retired bliss and I settled back ready to make a fortune on the stock market.  Such has been my success on the market, and the inherent boredom of looking at charts all day, I’m back. My new one-man band, JFH Consulting has a clear purpose driven by the huge advantage the internet and the connected world has to offer to even the smallest of business;
